Heater core failure? 200 1984

Was taking out the plastic floor mats to clean the carpet and noticed that the drivers side floor carpet was soaked in ati-freeze..Checked the expansion tank and it only had a tiny bit left it in. Added some water and seems to be holding with maybe only a little loss in coolant. This was last thursday, the carpet still seems to get wet with anti freeze, plus I haven't really soaked it up yet. Is this a heater core failure or some other kind of leak? I read another post on here that said heater cores usualy only fail if the car got hit in the front end. This car did but the damage was only to the bumper and front cross member. Still the car has almost 270,000 miles on it. Any help would be great. Dealer wants $930 to replace a heater core, so thats not at option. Thanks for your time..
