easiest way to remove CTS 200 1990

okay so the car has black smoke when in idle and more smoke when accelerated, i was thinking it was probably the coolant temperature sensor, and was wondering the easiest way to remove it, and test it, i tried to get to it but it seems everything is in the way, also is there another way of checking the fuel pressure regulator? i pulled the vac. line of and there is no gas in the line,so i dont think the diaphram is torn, but it smells a little gassy, is this normal? the weird thing is the car was running fine one minute and black smoke the next, any insight would be greatly appreciated.
