is it ok to run a new wire to intank pump for a temporary solution??? 200 1982

i have a new intank pump but it does not run. i have replaced the fuel pump relay and still not detection. i think the wiring is shot. i dont want to fork over the 100 bucks for a new sending unit if it is not the problem. can i run a fresh wire from outside the tank through the unused pipe on the sending unit to the pump to temporarily check to see if it works? the unused pipe i am talking about is the third one not used on the lid of the sending unit. it just has a black cap on it.
thanks,
jacob
