air mass flow meter,1990 240 DL 200

1990 240DL, "check engine light" on. Starts, runs, but at random times just cuts out for a second or two. Fault code indicates bad air mass flow meter. Anything I can do to check that out before spending several hundred dollars on a new mass flow meter?
