Replace annoying 1982-era seatbelt buckle receptacle with newer style? 200 1982

I have a 1982 244DL. It's very nice, but my poor passengers always fudge around trying to find the buckles sticking out at them... I have to help their hands into the area because everyone is so used to the grabbers that stick out.

Can I swap the middle console with something of a later era, giving me better belt buckle grabbers? Do I need any special tools?
