Spark Plug Gapping 700

I recently pulled and gapped the plugs on my 1985 745t while trying to quiet the engine a little bit, and found them WOEFULLY off... like double or triple spec in some instances. So... I thought I would post and find out if anyone else has found this to be a common condition on Volvos given that the gap is smaller than recommended for most american automobiles.

I realize some folks argue it doesn't matter, but I beg to differ after gapping mine properly (engine quieted down a bit and ran noticeably smoother). Is gapping more important on a Volvo or euro vehicle than american cars? On a side note, my car has been serviced for the last 10-12 years or so by solid independant mechanics, so I found it a bit surprising it should be so innacurate. Did they fail to think about it, or do most mechanics simply not bother being this thorough?

Anyway, if anyone else has come across this or has opinions please feel free to post to this thread... looking forward to a thorough discussion.
