940... -interference engine? 900

Thanks everyone! -Not that a broken timing belt is ever 'convenient', but it's good to know that there's a limit to the expense!

Actually, it sounds like it's pretty much the same rule as for VW engines;
8-valve motors are non-interference, but with 16(and higher!)-valve motors, you have to stay on top of the timing belt, for your wallet's sake!

My wife has a non-turbo '95 940, and I absolutely *love* working on it! -I have a 2000 VW Golf (my last 7 cars have all been VW) and since I got the 8-Valve motor, I'm much less nervous about premature belt failure. Now that I know that my wife's is also non-interference, I can relax about that car too!

When we first got the 940, I was disappointed with the lack of power, and wished we'd bought a 960, (never having driven one, but thinking that 6 has to be better than 4!) With the recent spate of 960 horror stories I feel more secure with the 4-cyl car, but not out of any "Schadenfreude" (delight at the misfortune of others), -I empathise with those few who've had such rotten luck, but I console myself with the thought that the almost 'bullet-proof' motor is at least one advantage.

The great things that I've found about Volvos (apart from the fact that all of my Metric tools work on her car too! ...oil drain plug excepted...) is that they seem to espouse the same solid engineering that I first fell in love with in my older VW's (Back in England) and the knowledgeable and helpful band of willing enthusiasts who love to roll up their sleeves is just like the very best of the VW enthusiast crowd.

..and as an added bonus, there's tons more room under in the engine bay of a 940 than there ever was in any VW I've ever owned!

Thanks again!
Keith A.
