Holy crap...you've got a Bertone!
Anyway, there's a whole lot of sounds that can come from a turbocharged engine, so you gotta describe the "whine" a little more in-depth.
Heavy boost makes big suction before the turbo. This presents itself as a hiss, usually for me, inside the dash, where it's sucking air through the ventilation system, or pushing it out some of the vacuum hose that comes through the firewall (like the one that goes to the boost guage). These are really minor things, the only reason I mention them is that they can be comparitively loud since they come from inside the passenger compartment.
The other thing is if there is an exhaust leak after the turbo, the normal turbo whine can be a good deal louder, with a sort of purr to it. I like to drive around with the test plug out of the catalytic convertor [:)] and that makes the turbo whistle/purr quite loud.
A clamp could have come loose with all your brisk driving, letting a bit of your boost, and some sound out of the intake.
Otherwise, if the whine sounds like scraping at all, any metallic sound, you could have issues with the bearings, or it could be contacting the housing.
On old volvos, if you have the radio on, the turbo spin up somehow presents itself over the stereo. Not sure how/why, probably a bad ground or electrical filter somewhere, but I've had this on a couple 760s.
Whatever it is, if the sound doesn't raise hair, and it's not lost any boost, go have fun...
You can always get a new center cartridge from Ipd for about a grand.
