Chasing Electrical Gremlins 200 1985

Hey Folks,

Here is the description: While driving, there is an amber light to the right of the "brake failure" red light on the dash that periodically flashes and shows a light bulb with an "X" through it. When applying the brakes, this light also comes on continuosly (and goes off when you get off the brakes). Also, the rear fog light indicator on the rocker switch lights up when you step on the brakes. I just discovered that my back up lights are not working at all (both lenses are gone, so maybe they got wet). Could this be what the amber light is telling me?

While we are discussing the dash area, is there a "best" way to get at something behind the dash? My fuel gauge is not working, and I need to check the mounting nuts for a loose connection, and then possibly change out some of the electronics. Do I just need to pull the entire instrument cluster out? If so, any tricks of the trade to simplify the old in and out?

Thanks for your help and advice! I have found these boards invaluable in my short time of owning a brick and reading these notes.
