Anyone know how to remove a stuck key from a tailgate lock? 900 1989

Anyone have any idea how to remove a key from the tailgate of my 1992 965. I tried everything short of removing the back gate panel and attacking this thing from behind. The key has play in it, which leads me to belive that one of the springs for the pins in the lock won't retract on its own. Secondly, if I do need to remove the gate pannel, how? Thanks for the help.
