general questions on 700 series 700

I have had an 83 240 wagon for the past 5 years and am pretty familiar with the 200 series. I'm considering a 740 wagon for the family (3 children aged 2 - 6 + significant other currently using 97 Villager) as the car seat requirement can now be reduced for the older kids especially if they're in a Volvo. Is the 740 considerably roomier than the 240, which is a little cramped with a car seat in the back and 2 other children on either side? What years or options are best in terms of engine and transmission? I've heard bad things about the b234 and the small journal b230? I don't really want a turbo because I'm thinking that it will be maintenance intensive in an older car and reduce gas mileage - correct? Thanks, I hope to join the forum soon.
