Valve noise + water leak 900

2 questions if anyone can help:

1) I have a slow coolant drip in the passenger foot well - but only when heater is turned to full heat. It doesn't drip when heater is say turned only half on. Do I need to change the heater core, or can I leave it alone as I guess it means lots of work to change?

2) I used to drive (until a few weeks ago) a 1991 VW which had hydraulic tappets, hence no valve noise at all in the cabin. I now have a 940 2.0litre turbo volvo and can hear valve ticking from all 8 valves (i.e. not just one valve buggered) in the cabin the whole time. It can get quite intrusive on the motorway when engine is 3000rpm. Volvo tell me this is normal on an engine of this age as it has old style tappets with shim adjustment. Am I to believe this. Does anyone else with this engine experience any noise at all. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound like the engine is going to blow or anything, it just annoys me after the totally quite unit of the VW.
