Cooling system question. Car seems fine with A/C on but with it off I smell that burnt coolant smell when I exit the car. 200 1991

Hi all,

My temperature gauge is tries its damndest to simulate a working gauge during normal street driving (it never goes above the halfway point) but on the highway with the A/C on, the temperature gauge goes down to read ZERO (or even below). So I figure the gauge must be shot.

My auxilary fan also does not come on. Could my thermostat be bad too?

I'm just dreading the mechanic's bill if all of these things are wrong and I'm contemplating simply driving with the A/C on all the time but figure if my gauge is bad... I could be frying my engine!

Thanks,

Ruben
