Decreasing MPG 1985 NA 700

My 740GLE 1985 non turbo has been getting worse and worse in the area of gas milage. I have a pretty strong smell at the same time from exhaust. Smells like an out of tune 60's V-8.

I've had the car for about 6 months and at that time replaced flame trap, distributor, plugs, wires, fuel pumps,air and oil filter.

It seems like it could be either the oxygen sensor or catalytic converter.

WOuld a valve adjustment be in order at this time? That's one area I haven't messed with.

Any advise would be welcome.
