Wiring/short problems - how to diagnose ? 200 1992

I am having prblems with my power windows (non work and the relay is fine) as well as the shift lock (fuse #6 blows when I put my foot on the grake to change gear and hence shift lock is engaged)
Here is a link to the discussion of the various problems and fixes to date. I suspect a bad ground or frayed wire possibly in the door hinge area but nothing is obvious. The sheath for the wiring going through the door hinge was split but the visible wires looked sound.. Looking for advice on how to find the exact problem ...
