90 240DL 4dr, please provide advice 200 1990

I have a sound, hum at low speeds(maybe even a hum from scraping metal), and a whining sound at high speeds, seems like the same problem. I have had the brakes looked at and replaced in the rear. The sound seems like it would be the driveshaft or axle or ball-bearings. I don't really know and need to have it looked at, but F/T student so been holding off on the expense. Before I do have it looked at and possibly taken advantage of, any suggestions?
Do 240's have this as a common problem possibly?
Thanks in advance.
