burning oil 700 1990

I recently took my 745 turbo wagon on a 600 mile roadtrip. The dipstick went from the top to the bottom.
I've been aware of a oil consumption problem for a while now.
I've replaced the oil trap, checked and flushed the hose that comes off the oil trap, checked compression on all 4 cylinders (160 all the way around). The problem still persists. Whenever I open the throttle up, I get some smoke coming out of the tailpipe. The car has 260,000KM on it. I suspect the turbo's going. I get 1 tablespoon of oil out of the intercooler when I undo the little plug in the bottom every few months.
Anything else I can check before I put a new turbo in it?

Also, I am considering going to a larger turbo. The tiny Mitsu they put in the wagons is a little undersize for my liking. Any suggestions?

Thanks

-Steve
