Charging the Battery 200 1982

This is a stupid question....first a little background.

I was recently given an '82 244DL by my very generous cousin. This is my first car and I know nothing (which will become obvious soon). Being a starving student, I don't quite have the funds for plates, inusurance, gas, etc. so I'm letting it sit for the winter. As Canadian winters tend to be on the cold side I took the battery out and am storing it (off the ground) in the basement. Its been three months and I'm going to be driving it soon and I want to put it on a trickle charger for awhile, in the hope that my car will start come spring.
My garage lacks heat and electricity.
My question is can I safely put this battery on a trickle charger in my basement? I would rather buy a new battery than blow up or incinerate myself and my roomates if there is a possibilty of gases being released and getting near pilot lights etc..
The battery is a Parts Master 65...it says its maintenance free...
