Hi Folks! I'm in deep kimshe here in Texas. I pulled a perfectly running 85 Volvo GL Wagon into the garage this afternoon to try some of the BrickBoard ideas for fixing a "no reverse lights" issue. After removing/cleaning/de-corroding all 16 fuses and locations on the fuse box, and checking that the reverse light bulbs themselves are not burned out, I still have no reverse lights. Oh well, I think, there are still other avenues to take to attack this issue. But, while it's in the garage, I might as well do a little engine bay spruce up since I recently did the "flame trap" thing and am no longer blowing oil all over the engine bay.
After an hour or so, the engine bay looked great! So....I started her up to pull her out. Oh my! She started, ran for about 5 seconds and died. Sounded like I had mixed up all of the plug wires, or as though it had totally jumped timeing! Problem is, I never touched the plug wires, and never even removed the distributor cap! I did move a bunch of wiring and hoses around to clean things up, so I guess I have somehow disconnected something. Two things jumped out at me after further review: (85 240 Wagon with B230 engine)
1) There is a small black wire coming off of the large red wire going into the back of the alternator that is not only not connected to anything, the end is just a raw, broken wire end. The closest possible point of connection looks like some sort of "sending unit"(??)coming out of the engine block just to the front of the oil filter. It doesn't look like it has been connected to anything before, but surely it was. Maybe I broke it and didn't realize it at the time. Can't imagine this could be the problem.
2) There is a gray junction box piece laying on top of the intake that has three wires leading into it, and back out again. I never disconnected any of the wires, but I moved it around a bunch during cleaning. This looks like it is an important piece. Should I try to remove all the wires and reconnect them?
Any other ideas? It was 70 degrees here today, but man is it frosty in the house right now! Plus, I am getting a bit hungry as well. Somebody please help!!!
THANKS!!!!
