Clanking when converter clutch engages or disengages 900 1992

Dan, I get the noise in third and OD. The noise is kind of a bell sound but it
not the drive shaft yoke shims described in Volvo Tech info from Alldata.
The torque converter has a lock up feature that engages on OD, third, and second gear dependent on temperature- transmission temp I think.

The noise is easily demonstrated by the following:
1)Drive at an even speed- 35 to 45. At higher speeds road noise will mask the noise. The torque converter clutch will be engaged (locked).

2) Lightly depress the brake pedal. This will disengage the clutch putting
the transmission is coasting mode. One or two clanks can be heard.

3) Release the brake pedal. The clutch will engage to eliminate converter
slippage and increase gas mileage. On engagement 3 to 6 clunks can be heard.

I have no noise shifting from drive to reverse.
I have change the trans fluid twice (the 3 quarts in pan only.)
I have checked the trottle position sensor. I don't remember the voltage
but it was in spec but on the high side closed and on the low side wide open.
I also cleaned the trottle body (significant carbon build up).
These steps made the transmission shift much smoother.

I did find I could make a simular noise by striking the shield over the exhaust manifold. This has been eliminated by replacing 3 bolts in the shield.

Thanks for your imput.

Rod
