81 240 DL trans headache!

This past weekend I replaced the clutch cable on my 81 DL wagon. I took it for a test drive and it drove beautiful, every gear engaged, and there was no slipping at high RPM's. So I turned around, and tried to start out in first... no go. I had to start it in gear, and pull out. Later, I couldn't get it into any gear. I could then shift with the rpms, but not with the clutch peddle. So I turned it off and let it sit for a little while. It worked, but not as good as the first time, and then again stopped engaging. I kinda just gave up instead of trying to adjust it. I just don't know why it would work so great at first, and then not? Do these things have fluid anywhere that I should check? I'm pretty sure it's the M46.
