Swinging Voltmeter 700 1987

The voltmeter gauge in my 87 765T 168k likes to swing up a down alot. Sometimes at idle it drop to zero and the engine seems to almost want to stubble. After accelerating for awhile it comes back to the midlle position. The Alternator has been rebuilt (twice) and it has all new engine wiring. The amp light does not come on and the battery works fine. Any idea?
