I am not familiar with your type of guage that goes to zero. The dash guage is not always accurate and should only be used as a warning not for diagnostics. It would be best to check voltage with a meter at the battery to really see what is happening, I doubt that the battery voltage is going to zero. If your idle is very slow due to an engine fault then the alternator turning slow would allow voltage in the car to drop to battery voltage. Normal voltage with engine and alternator working OK would be around 14.5 volts without accessories or lights on.
