Air filter box lining 900 1992

Hi everyone,
I bought a 92 940T a few weeks ago and when I changed the air filter I found the top of the filter box was lined with foam that has deteriorated over the years. It looked OK but as soon as it was touched it broke down into powder. As I didn't want it to be sucked into the engine I removed all of it. Does anyone know if this foam serves a purpose and needs to be replaced? All of the other cars I have owned with similar filters have not had foam lining the box.
Thanks.
