Strange clunking in front end... 700 1988

Hello everyone,

My '88 760 is making a strange clunking noise in the front end. I first checked the 700/900 series FAQ but found no problem similar to mine there. Anyway, the car makes a clunk (usually when backing up with the wheels turned moderately) when, say, backing out of a parking spot. The car never makes this noise when going straight, but has made the noise in drive with the wheels turned moderately. Usually, it is in reverse with the wheels turned and sometimes the brakes applied. (as I said, the best description is when backing out of a parking spot). The noise sounds like a rubber mallet hitting the firewall (not a really metallic noise, just a clunk). It seems to be becoming more frequent, so I'd like to fix it if possible. The all bushings (minus the sway-bar) in the front end are brand new. What could this be? Sorry for the lengthy message and thanks for your help.
