240 Brake Pad Replacement S90-V90 1990

The RH rear brake on my recently aquired '90 240 (182240 miles) would start to squeal after a few stops. I've owned a '74 144 and '75 164 previously and learned early on that aftermarket pads usually did not work as well as factory supplied pads. Tonight I stopped at the local dealer and procured a new rear set of pads. While removing the old set, found discs in reasonable shape, but found no anti-squeal shims. Hmphh, says I, and opened the new box of pads. Surprise, not only metal anti- squeal shims, but black teflon-like ones as well. I installed two shims per pad (sandwiched: metal, black stuff, brake pad), did not have to use the BMFH to smack the assembly together, and all seems well after tooling around a few miles. This was too easy, what did I do wrong? I remember the the metal A/S shims from the old days, but the addition of the black pads? (all of it fits, undersize disks? also no set-up like this on the ATE brakes on my VW (sorry) Vanagon Syncro). Is this a new anti-squeal measure?
