Clutch parts/brands 140-160 1971

Early in my project, probably November of 2000, I had to replace my clutch plate before I got the engine and trans in the car. I think I found that I couldn't control them assembled to stuff them in together. When I went to splt them apart, the pilot shaft was frozen in the pilot bearing (transmision had been separate from an engine for at least 10 years and never having seen a rusty pilot shaft end I didn't check it out). I had to pull and pry until I could get access to clutch cover bolts, then back them off. I don't remember if I was able to get the retainer ring on the bearing to pop out of the land or just what but finally separated them. Anyway in the process I broke one or more of the flexible steel web arms between the hub and outer ring of the disk plate so I replaced the disk with a relined one from a local parts store. I recall that I noticed that the manufacturer was different from the one I removed and somewhat different configuration but seemed identical in fit so I pressed on.

College, work, and another project car interupted. Now I see in the Haynes manual there is a picture of two clutch covers with a caption that there are two different manufacturers of clutch assemblies and they are interchangable but not the individual parts. I don't know if that means the various springs and levers of the cover assemblies or if that means pull the transmission again (did it last week to change fork and throwout bearing). Anyone had this mix and match before? The clutch cover and throwout bearing installed are F&S. I get about 3/16 inch of movement from when the throwout hits the arms of the cover assembly until the fork bottoms on the edge of the hole in the bell housing. Maybe the new clutch lining material is just a bit thick and needs to get worn down a bit? I can start the engine with the transmission in gear okay but shifting is extremely stiff, grinding to get into reverse.

I have some time before getting on the road. I discovered freezing brakes on my cruise around the cul-de-sac. New hoses will cost about $130 and that is just plain old parts house stuff, not ipd braided!
