Hi,
I own a Volvo 144, from 1974. I've recently had some problems with starting the car. I took it to my local auto electrician, as it sounded like a starter motor problem. It turns out that the inhibitor switch is broken. The mechanic called a few Volvo wreckers here in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, but no one had any replacement parts in stock, and a new part, according to one distributor, will cost AU$300 (about US$150). I'd rather get a second-hand part if at all possible (I'm a poor, starving student ;-)). The mechanic by-passed the inhibitor switch and gave me my car back, so at the moment I am able to start my car whilst in gear (not that I'm going to do that as I always leave the car in park).
Anyway according to the mechanic, I have to get an inhibitor switch from the same model as my 144, including year and month! Is this right? I can't use a 240 inhibitor switch (there are plenty of 240s around these parts)?
Also, is it something that I can do myself, bearing in mind that I still have a lot to learn about my Volvo (but am a technically and mechanically minded person)? I'm eager to learn, and have the Haynes 140 series manual. It doesn't mention inhibitor switches in the index, though. What does one of these switches look like?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Sam
