Problems with heater fan in ACC equipped '89 780 700

I have been having problems with the ACC system shutting down in my '89 780 with Automatic Climate Control. When I summon the error codes, I get the code "Fan seized or drawing too much current".
At first this occured only when the weather got hot (about 80F or above), but now it happens almost all the time. Sometimes it's fine for the first few minutes, then the system shuts down and the error light (AC light) starts blinking. I took the fan out and connected it to the battery directly, and it runs strong. Of course I have no way of seeing how much current is it drawing.
I cleaned all the connections in the wire leading from the controlled to the fan, and this eliminated the problem for a few minutes, but then it was back to the blinking light.
I am inclined to just change the fan, as I don't really know what else to do.
It cost $75 at some of the discount sites. This is the newer 2-wire fan. I know that an early 80's Citation with AC is supposed to have the same fan as some 700 cars, but I assume that's the early one-wire fan. Am I correct? Is there a generic available for the two-wire fan?
