Crankshaft bolt removal trick. 200

Has anyone tried removing the crankshaft bolt by using a small wooden wedge at the point where the alternator belts meet the crankshaft pulley so that when counterclockwise pressure is applied with the wrench, the crankshaft pulley is stopped from further movement and this allows the bolt to be loosened? It worked for me this morning,but I also put the car in fourth gear(M47). worked .It at least saves the tranny from all the force.
Doesn't seem to bother the belts either.
