Hall sensor shorting out on 87, 740 GLE 700

I have gone through 2 distributors in a short time. I replaced the plug on the first one. The hall sensor has blown on both of them. When the car is running it misses slightly, and would occassionally die, but mostly run, idle, warm up just fine. I had a new Voltage Regulator installed in December. Could this be the culprit? Is the Hall sensor somehow getting a burst that shorts it out? Is it possible to install an inline fuse that would blow first? Should I trace the wires for the plug back to the Computer in search of a short? I hope someone will have input other than "better replace the whole wiring harness".
Thanks
N.
