growling manual tranny - suggestions ? 200

i have a '82 245 w/ the b23e engine, not sure what the tranny model is, but it has a horrible whine/growl in first thru 3rd gear, 4th is fine still. my dad's mechanic seems to think i should just find another transmission to swap in. what are the odds of finding a decent transmission at the wreckers or how hard is it to rebuild/replace whatever worn bushings are causing the problem ?
