Instrument Panel Lights Blew!!! 200 1987

So after many hours of grueling work and several hundred dollars invested in making my Brick a lean machine i have yet another problem. i was driving along at night when all of a sudden a heard a "pop", followed by a bad smell and my instrument panel lights going out. i thought it was some major electric issue but my turn signal indicators, gauges, and warning lights still function correctly. is it the rheostat? please help me out Bricksters! :)
