As I start the "shakedown" of the 122, I've run into a curious thing.
Installed rebuilt carbs from Ztherapy and finally popped a thermostat back in. (carbs a real splurge, but they are only 45 minutes from Portland)
The car has not really seen the streets since I got it back in Sept. When I first restarted it in December, it promptly overheated. I assumed a bad thermostat and replaced it with a cheap part from a local psrts store. Same result. I cut the thermostat apart and reinstalled so as to have a gasket in place and all was good. No overheating. I blamed the thermostat again.
So bought one from IPD and its been sitting on the parts shelf until yesterday. Installed and again it promptly overheats. No coolant circulates. I removed it and again all is OK. Just tested the thermostat in boiling water and it opens. Don't have a suitable thermometer to test when it begins to open, but it does open.
I've also tested the temperature guage and so I know that it does indicate operating temperatures. So when it says its in the the red, its definitely past boiling.
I have a B18B. I believe the B18/B20's all used the same thermostat housing and only the temperature rating changed. So can't quite grasp why the thermostat could open, but no coolant circulates. I know that the thermostat acts as a valve to both open the radiator port and simultaneously blocks a port visible when the thermostat is out.
I've also backflushed from the return of the heater circuit and seemed to get flow through the block fine. But something isn't right obviously.
I'm pretty puzzled by this. So before I call Tom & Ray, or a mechanic. I thought I would get input from the BB.
Any ideas?
