Need location of external stereo amplifier in my 1994 850 wagon

About a month ago the stereo in my 850 wagon quit working. Everything works (lights come on, am/fm station presets tune in, tape turns, etc), but nothing but a very soft hiss can be heard coming from all 8 speakers. I suspected the problem was the stereo unit itself until I plugged in a used one (with a 3 cd changer) and it behaved exactly the same. So now my suspicions are that there is an external amplifier that is not working. The dealership says my stereo unit needs replacing, but when I asked them if the stereo has an external amplifier, they didn't know. I would like to upgrade to the used one with the 3 cd changer but I can't see doing that until I am sure the rest of my system is working properly.

Can anyone confirm the existance of an external amplifier in a 1994 850 wagon, and offer advice on fixing it?
