Spark plug electrodes being hit by something 200 1979

hi,

Nick here with the '79 Volvo 244 with running problem.

My newest, most bizarre and possibly most damaging problem this car has is something is hitting the spark plug electrode. I put in new spark plugs. I put in an accepted brand. Autolite 64 coppers (I'd like to get NGK, but how do I know this wont happen to new NGK's?), and I gap them at the correct gap, and I go to take them out about a week later, the electrodes on all 4 spark plugs are pushed to where there is less than 7 thousanths of an inch gap. There is hardly enough space between the inner electrode and the outer that that may be why it's misfiring. The engine is not giving itself a chance to run correctly, because something is smacking the electrode back so far. What could it be, and what are some things I can do to fix this problem?

from Nick
