What part of the charging system? The generator or the regulator?
(or the fuse box or the wiring?)

I've been using generators in a 444, 544s and 122s (4 of them) since
1967 and find the alternator in the 164 to be no more reliable.
They both have problems but are relatively easily managed if you
know what you are doing and can get the parts.

I suspect you found the alternator better because you are comparing
a new alternator to an old generator/regulator.
