FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR 700 1985

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My 85 740 packed up all of a sudden. Right now, it will start up but will not continue to run or idle. If I keep pumping the gas I can get it to sustain about 2000 rpm for a few seconds. Previously, it had been a bit sluggish on acceleration and I'd been meaning to check it out. I suspect the FPR but have no pressure gauge. The vac line is clear, as is the return line. If I pull the tank pump fuse, it behaves almost the same, so it might be that as well. Can anyone who has suffered a FPR failure describe the symptoms? Also symptoms of no tank pump running?
I tried to test the tank pump by disconnecting the fuel line to the rail and pulling the main pump fuse, then cranking to see if it lifts fuel to the rail. It didn't, but then I checked the wiring diag and pulling the main pump fuse also disables the tank pump. Dumb idea. Other info: Non turbo, has new fuel filter.
Art.
