Fuel Pump Woes 700

I've finally narrowed the no start condition on my '89 760Ti wagon to the fuel pump. It was letting out a high pitched squeal, then nothing. Verified no flow to the fuel pressure regulator. Replaced the relay and regulator to ensure everything up to the pump is good.

Here's a question: The engine will run if the prepump is bad but the main pump is good, right? I'm trying to ensure I'm covering all bases without pre-emptively buying a complete new fuel system. The pre-pump makes happy noises when energized, so I'm assuming the main pump won't let the fuel reach the fuel rail if it's dead.

Any second opinions are welcome.
