This is exactly what happened when my air mass meter died - surging acceleration, couldn't drive over about 15-20mph in 1st gear. Unplug the AMM, start the car, and see what happens.

Otherwise...fuel pump relay? This caused similar symptoms on my car (much later in its life). The car would accelerate normally for maybe 5 seconds and then cut out, back on, off, back on, etc. Difference was that I could get up to speed, but the car was jerking all the way.
