240 Auto trans / overdrive? Problem 200 1991

Hi,
I've got 145k on this car and everything has been great until the start of this year. The mass air meter went in mid january and stranded me in the sticks, but yesterday I was on the expressway going 70 and the car spontaneously downshifts from 4(overdrive?) to 3. I slowed down really fast and pulled off. I turn the car off, but every time I restart it the little orange arrow in the lower right of the dash stays on. I am guessing something might be amiss with the button in the shift handle because pushing it repeatedly has no effect on the status of the light. About this time a "friendly" state cop stops and wants to know what it up. I mumble something about the transmision and he decides to run my license for kicks. I finally limped the 3/4 of a mile to the next exit going 45 and by the time I hit the top of the ramp it kicked back into 4 and I has on my way. Any ideas? Thanks,
doh
