You can't take an M46 out of an 81 240 DL without taking the engine out, can you?

2" is not enough clearance for a manual trans. The input shaft is still in the clutch. Get under the car, put the 4 bolts back in for the shifter framework. Remove the allen head set screw from the bottom of the shifter and push out the pin. It's about 1"long and goes side to side. Get inside the car and remove the snap ring that retains the base of the shifter in the framework, and pull out the shifter. Back under the car, rotate the trans counterclockwise till the protrusion in the bell housing for the starter clears the body, and down she comes.
