740 gle non start 700 1987

Hi guy's I have a 87 740 gle just purchased and ran fine for a few weeks.Now all of a sudden it quit running on my wife. Doesn't have spark checked distributor and hall connector which was broken and hanging loose so i replaced the entire distributor which was used from a junkyard and still no start condition remains.I'm getting fuel and the pump relays react properly per several posts i've read here. I am at my wits end,My wife doesn't "know" if the tach worked before or not(why do we let women drive anyway?)so i can't use that as a frame of reference when turning over engine.What would you guy's suggest from this point? I HAVE to fix this car or she will start driving my beloved pick-up Please help before she destroys my truck as well!!(just kidding) This car has almost taken the joy out of working on cars in general the haynes manual is ok but just doesn't go far enough for me to "get it". Thank you for any info you may provide for me.
