'71 1800E First Impressions - Help! 1800

Okay, we drove the 1800 home Saturday. Nice seating position, good lower back support, not much underneath. The engine is loud - lots of clatter. The exhaust is boomy. It runs a little rough when cold. No appreciable smoke. Needs an alignment.
My biggest concern is the engine clatter. Is that normal? Are the valves so noisy? I can't see any exhaust leaks. It sounds like a VW Beetle. The shift is also rough, there is a harsh noise when I engage the clutch at speed. It's not loud but it doesn't feel quite right.
The power brakes don't feel like there's much assist. Everything looks normal.
This is a beautiful car, I love the lines. Any guidance you can give would be appreciated. Thanks, Ed
