Brake lights stuck 700 1989

My left brake light is permanently "on" when I have my lights on, in other words its always in the bright mode, signalling my brakes are being stepped on even though theyre not. I replaced the bulb and checked the fuse--what next? The right one works fine, dim when I'm not stepping on the brake and bright when I am! Any help is appreciated.
