You can't take an M46 out of an 81 240 DL without taking the engine out, can you?

It's for your blisters.

Then rub your blisters all over the splined input shaft -- a light coating should be enough to prevent blisters on the splined shaft, too.

Don't forget to replace the rear main seal while you have access to it.
