A/C doesn't work, need more advice 700 1992

I just called a local import shop that I know deals with a lot of Volvos. I've never dealt with them before but they seem to be pretty honest and straightforward. He told me he wanted to charge it and try to find the leak. He also said that to check the system and recharge it, he would charge $60. That's before he repairs my leak though. I also looked briefly at the recharge kits at Wally World last night and I think the one that I need is $25. I'm thinking that for $60 if I can be done with it, I'm happy. However, I know that there's going to be additional charges to fix what's leaking, so the bill could escalate quite a bit. Do you think that I'm better off just getting the new accumulator, checking out all my connections for leaks myself and then charging it and looking for a leak?

He mentioned that a common source of leaks it the hose from the compressor to the condenser. How hard is this to change by myself? I guess I would have to depressurize the system first, which means another charge, right?

More questions to follow I'm sure.

Thanks again
Don
