A/C probs 700 1991

ok so first off i have a 91 740T w/ 98k on the clock
so well now to the problem. while driving from LA to SD(~2 hour drive) my friend and i were kicking back just enjoying the road when i look behind me to see white smoke coming out from behind my car. now this scared the heck out of me so i checked all my gauges and everything was fine so i pulled off the freeway into a gas station about 1 min after i first saw the smoke. when i poped the hood to check out what was wrong it smelled like rubber was burning, so i checked and my belt for my A/C had broke what it seemed like @ least. and for some odd reason i noticed the small parts of rubber all over the engine in a line with where the old belt was so with the engine still running tryed to turn the A/C and to my surprize it was frozen. so it looks like the A/C motor had seized and that caused the belt to melt on the metal since the crank pulley was still turning that belt. so oh well no more A/C.(oh and while we were driving i did have the A/C on... but i have used the A/C like 12 hour s of on time since i've had the car from 81k miles).
So that's not to big of a problem since i don't need A/C for another few months... but NOW one day after i turned on my fan and noticed that its not coming throught the vents ... but it is coming uout of the defroster vents only .... no matter what setting i put it for it will not change the air flow. I've checked all the fuses with a test light and then tested each one with an visual inspection and they all pass fine. hm so now i come to you guys to ask for help in what could of caused both of these problems ... if they are related or just happen to happen @ the same time (well not the same time the vents used to work even after the A/C went). tonight i'm going to pull apart the glove box and see if i can find out what's not working with the vent control from the back side and check all the Vent tubing.

mike
