tailgate lock malfunction 900 1991

I cannot open my tailgate. The key enters the lock, it turns to the left but not to the right and hence the gate does not open.

In a similar message someone mentioned that with a properly working tailgate lock, you can turn the key all the way to the left, which DE-activates the normal lock/unlock mechanism.

I have the tailgate off, but I am not sure where I should start next.

Any help would be appreciated.
