What's causing my 245 to run like this? 200 1991

My '91 245 suddenly started running badly. It's knocking when I accelerate even a little. Once I get it up to higher speeds (55-60), this stops unless I go up a hill. If I back off the gas, I can get it to stop knocking. It is also idling higher than usual, to the point where it will take off on its own when I put it in Drive. When I take my foot off the gas and let it coast, it surges (or actually the opposite of this). This is very subtle. The "check engine" light is on. Can anyone help? Could it be the ECU or AMM?
I'm going to take it in to my Volvo mechanic on Tuesday. This car has a history of stalling immediately after starting. I've had the throttle body cleaned several times which only helps that problem a short time. My mechanic advanced the throttle switch a bit to try to help with the stalling problem. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Jack
